  • Text Books: On-line texts (local archive); texts that I use.
  • Introduction to Computer Networks: these lecture notes come from the 3rd year of a computer systems engineering program. Examples have been adjusted for JCU and some improvements applied before this release.
  • Introduction to Microprocessor Systems: these lecture notes were developed for the 2nd year of a computer systems engineering program (RMIT) and an electrical engineering degree program (ADFA), and were a reference at Sydney Uni. An MC68HC11 processor is used with coding at a C language and assembly language level. An overview of data acquisition and linear control is included.
  • UNIX: this document describes commands and utilities that are often used. See also my main UNIX material page.
  • My general assignment submission instructions.

• Projects and Seminars:
  • My set of notes on writing a technical presentation come from recent teaching in software engineering - I think these are quite good;
  • Standard versions of my seminar marking sheet and my project self-assessment sheet (developed from versions by Pj Radcliffe of RMIT Computer Systems Engineering);
  • Collaborative projects between clients and students can bring out the best in both - see the processes developed for the SIT industry collaboration program developed by Chris Gaskett and myself, based to some extent on joint experience that we had from the excellent school of engineering CEED program at RMIT;
  • One of my mentors, Bob Bitmead, has written this document titled The things I hate in other people's seminars (pdf, local copy) - I believe this may have been therapy for him after one-too-many international conferences to chair;
  • Snapshot (2007) of the School of IT CP3046/CP3047 project subjects;

• Honours:
  • This Honours Overview describes planning and induction, and also discusses how to best tune an undergraduate program to support honours.
  • Paper assessment: the Cairns SIT cp5090 guidelines give a good introduction to paper deconstruction (and construction), see also this brief paper assessment information from Bruce Litow and Eoin Hyden;
  • A sample project proposal is available in LaTeX for use by honours students. The Makefile generates example output in ps and pdf form. Documentation for the teTeX distribution of LaTeX and related tools is available on-line at http://mirriwinni.cs.jcu.edu.au/doc_texmf with the latex-2e user manual available at Hypertext Help with LaTeX. There is also the Cambridge help on Squeezing Space in LaTeX.
  • As noted in The Chronicle of Higher Education, it is possible to reverse a recent trend of students away from reviewed material --- see Web-Loving Students Can Be Prodded to Cite Peer-Reviewed Works in Term Papers (February 6 2003) [local copy].

• Programming Notes: covers topics such as debugging reasoning, use of the ddd debugger and make tools, decoding complex C/C++ declarations, examples of iterative refinement, etc., available at the thoughtfully named programming_notes web page.

• Workshops: covers a (hopefully growing) collection of planned sessions on topics such as: BSD UNIX Installation, Apache build and configuration, etc. available at /~phillip/workshops.

  • The Australian Science Teachers Association aim to improve the study of science and mathematics at Australian High Schools.
  • Miscellaneous**2:
    • The UNIX command col -b can be used to filter typeset UNIX man pages for viewing on a browser.
    • Bloat is a common artifact of certain vendors' software development tools. Read this item and learn how to turn a 45K utility into a 450K utility (or, just maybe, vice-versa).
